The Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu, also known as the Tamil Nadu Vidhan Sabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 234 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Chennai, the capital of the state.
The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu were held in May 2021.

- The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections in 2021 saw 3,998 candidates contesting for 234 seats, a 6% increase over the 2016 Assembly elections which had 3,771 candidates.
- A record 107 political parties contested the 2021 Assembly elections, in comparison to 90 parties in the 2016 Assembly elections.
- 92 of the 107 parties secured less than or equal to 0.1% votes individually and only 0.6% of total votes cast in the 2021 Assembly elections collectively.
- Tamil Nadu had 62.9 million registered voters (electors) in the 2021 Assembly elections, in comparison to 57.8 million registered voters in 2016.
- Only 72.7% of the voters exercised their franchise in the 2021 Assembly elections, a 2% drop over the 2016 Assembly elections. The men and women voter turnout was similar levels at 72.9% and 72.6% respectively.
