The Legislative Assembly of Jharkhand, also known as the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 81 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Ranchi, the capital of the state.

The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Jharkhand were held in Dec 2019.

  • In comparison, the 2014 Assembly elections had 1,136 candidates, 7% lower than in 2019.

  • 89 political parties contested the 2019 Assembly elections, in comparison to 66 parties in the 2014 Assembly elections.
  • 68 of the 89 parties secured less than or equal to 0.1% votes individually and only 1.7% of total votes cast in the 2019 Assembly elections collectively. Of these, 44 parties were new political outfits.

  • Jharkhand had 23.1 million registered voters (electors) in the 2019 Assembly elections, in comparison to 20.9 million voters in 2014.
  • 65.2% of the voters exercised their franchise in the 2019 Assembly elections, an 1.2% drop over the 2014 Assembly elections. The women's voter turnout of 66.9% was higher than men's turnout of 63.6%.
  • The total voter turnout in Jharkhand Assembly elections is currently amongst the lowest of all states in India
