The Legislative Assembly of Kerala, also known as the Niyamasabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 140 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram.

The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Assam were held in May 2021.

  • The Kerala Legislative Assembly elections in 2021 saw 957 candidates contesting for 140 seats, a 20.4% decrease over the 2016 Assembly elections with 1,203 candidates.

  • 49 political parties contested the 2021 Assembly elections, in comparison to 38 parties in the 2016 Assembly elections.
  • 24 of the 49 parties secured less than or equal to 0.1% votes individually and only 0.3% of total votes cast in the 2021 Assembly elections collectively.

  • Kerala had 27.5 million registered voters (electors) in the 2021 Assembly elections, in comparison to 26.1 million registered voters in 2016.
  • 73.9% of the voters exercised their franchise in the 2021 Assembly elections, a 4.1% decrease over the 2016 Assembly elections. The women's voter turnout at 73.9% was just as much as that of men's.
  • After increasing for two consecutive Assembly elections, the total voter turnout in the Kerala Assembly elections dipped in 2021.
