The Legislative Assembly of Puducherry, also known as the Puducherry Vidhan Sabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 30 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).

The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Puducherry were held in Apr 2021.

  • The Puducherry Legislative Assembly elections in 2021 had 324 candidates contesting for 30 seats, a 6% decrease over the 2016 Assembly elections which had only 344 candidates.

  • 8 of the 21 parties secured less than or equal to 0.1% votes individually and only 0.4% of total votes cast in the 2021 Assembly elections.

  • Puducherry had 10 lakh registered voters (electors) in the 2021 Assembly elections, in comparison to 942K registered voters in 2016.
  • 81.7% of the total voters exercised their franchise in the 2021 Assembly elections, a 2.3% drop over the 2016 Assembly elections. The women's voter turnout at 82.2% was marginally higher than that of men's at 81.2%.
  • The total voter turnout in Puducherry has been steadily declining over the last 3 Assembly elections - from 86% in 2006 to 81.7% in 2021. Despite its decline, the voter turnout in Puducherry in 2021 yet counts amongst the highest of all states in India.
