The Legislative Assembly of Assam, also known as the Assam Vidhan Sabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 126 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Dispur, the capital of the state.
The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Assam were held in April 2021.

- The Assam Legislative Assembly elections in 2021 had 946 candidates contesting for 126 seats, a 11% decrease over the 2016 Assembly elections with 1,064 candidates.
- 42 political parties contested the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, in comparison to 37 parties in the 2016 Assembly elections.
- 26 of the 42 parties secured less than 0.1% votes individually and only 0.83% of the total votes cast in the 2021 Assembly elections.
- Assam had 23.4 million registered voters (electors) in the 2021 Assembly elections, in comparison to 20 million registered voters in 2016.
- 81.8% of the total registered voters exercised their franchise in the 2021 Assembly elections, a 2.7% decrease over the 2016 Assembly elections. The voter turnout for men and women were similar at 81.6% and 82% respectively.
