The Legislative Assembly of Punjab, also known as the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 117 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Chandigarh, the capital of the state.

The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Punjab were held in Feb 2022.

The 16th Legislative Assembly of Punjab formed post the elections held in Feb 2022 consists of 117 MLAs. AAAP (Aam Aadmi Party) won 92 seats in the 2022 Assembly elections, pushing it comfortably over the majority mark of 59 seats to form the government.

  • AAAP (Aam Aadmi Party) currently has 92 MLAs in the Punjab Assembly giving it control over 79% of the total seats in the Assembly
  • INC (Indian National Congress) has 18 MLAs and sits in the Opposition
  • All other parties and independent MLAs together account for 7 seats
