The Legislative Assembly of Gujarat, also known as the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 182 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Gandhinagar, the capital of the state.

The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Gujarat were held in Dec 2022.

The 15th Legislative Assembly of Gujarat formed post the elections held in Dec 2022 consists of 182 MLAs. BJP secured the highest count of 156 seats in the 2022 Assembly elections, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 92 seats to form the government. Subsequently, bye-elections were held to elect MLAs who had resigned.

  • The BJP now has 161 MLAs in the Gujarat Assembly giving it control over 88% of the total seats in the Assembly
  • INC has 12 MLAs
  • All other parties and independent MLAs together account for 7 seats
  • 2 seats are currently vacant
