The Legislative Assembly of Jharkhand, also known as the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 81 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Ranchi, the capital of the state.

The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Jharkhand were held in Dec 2019.

The 5th Legislative Assembly of Jharkhand formed post the elections held in Dec 2019 consists of 81 MLAs. Despite winning the highest number of seats, JMM could not cross the majority mark of 41 on its own and relied on the support of its UPA alliance partners (INC and RJD) to form the government in 2019. Subsequently there were a few changes in the composition of the assembly based on the bye-elections held in specific constituencies.

  • The Mahagathbandhan alliance (led by a JMM Chief Minister) now has 48 MLAs in the Jharkhand Assembly giving it a control 74% of the total seats in the Assembly
  • BJP has 26 MLAs and sits in the Opposition
  • All other parties and independent MLAs together account for 6 seats
  • 1 seat is currently vacant
