The Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya, also known as the Meghalaya Vidhan Sabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 60 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Shillong, the capital of the state.
The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Meghalaya were held in Feb 2023.

PARTY COMPOSITION
The 11th Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya formed post the elections held in Feb 2023 consists of 60 MLAs. The 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections resulted in a hung assembly with no party getting the requisite majority of 31 seats to form the government on its own. Despite winning the maximum seats, NPP was unable to gather the required majority along with its allies. However, the MDA coalition (NPP, UDP, BJP, HSPDP, and 2 independent candidates) with 45 seats formed the government in 2023. Subsequently, there were a few changes in the composition of the assembly based on the bye-elections held in specific constituencies.
- The MDA coalition now has 49 MLAs in the Meghalaya Assembly giving it control over 83% of the total seats in the Assembly
- The INC has 1 MLA
- All other parties and independent MLAs together account for 9 seats
- 1 seat is currently vacant

- 28% MLAs in the current Assembly have little to no education (grade 12 or below), in comparison to 36% in the previous Assembly.
- 32% MLAs in the current Assembly are Graduates, in comparison to 40% in the previous Assembly.
- 35% MLAs in the current Assembly are highly qualified (professionals and above), in comparison to 22% in the previous Assembly.
- Only 5% MLAs in the current Assembly are women
- The percentage of women in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly remains between 5-7% since 2008 and is amongst the lowest of all states in India.
