Police Force
The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the three All India Services, along with the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Forest Service (IFS) - its officers can be employed by both the Union Government and the individual states. The Indian Police service was envisaged to command and provide leadership to state police forces and the union territories and also Central Armed Police Forces (BSF, SSB, CRPF, CISF, & ITBP) and Central Police Organizations. IPS officers played a key role in formation of Central armed Police Forces and their subsequent growth.
Civil or State Armed Police Forces - They are the police units established for dealing with serious law and order situations requiring a higher level of armed expertise than normal. The State Armed Police Forces exist in addition to the ordinary police services of the various states
DAR - Within states, each police district may maintain its own teams of policemen with higher firearms competence. Such teams, known as "district armed police", are for purely local use and are not part of the State Armed Police Forces.
Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) - It refers to uniform nomenclature of security forces in India under the authority of Ministry of Home Affairs. They are the Assam Rifles (AR), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and National Security Guard (NSG) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) is responsible for research and development of the police force in India.

- The total police force (Civil, DAR, Armed, IRB) in 2020 saw a decrease of 1% over 2019.
- The Indian police have a shortfall of 562,000 personnel within its workforce compared to its budgeted strength. In 2020, 1 in 5 positions in the Indian Police Force remains unfilled.
- The workforce for CID/Crime Branch was cut back by 334 personnel in 2020 while the workforce in the Intelligence Branch, Terrorist Branch, and Traffic Police was increased by 1621, 3677, and 951 personnel respectively in 2020.
- 83% of the total actual police workforce strength comprises constables and head constables
- Dy. Inspector General (DIG) positions have increased by 39% between 2017 and 2020. In comparison, the overall police workforce has increased by only 6.6% during the same period.
