In simplest terms, a crime is defined as an action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law. In India, crime are grouped under 2 major law codes;

  • IPC: The Indian Penal Code (IPC) is the official criminal code of India. It is a comprehensive code intended to cover all substantive aspects of criminal law.
  • SLL: Special and Local Laws (SLL) are acts that are framed by the state government for specific issues. eg. the law prohibiting the sale of lottery tickets or the Antiques and Art Treasures Act.

SLL: Special and Local Laws (SLL) are acts that are framed by the state government for specific issues. eg. the law prohibiting the sale of lottery tickets or the Antiques and Art Treasures Act.

  • India's overall crime incidences dropped by 4.5% in 2025 where a total of 5,824,946 crimes were reported. Of these, 61% were IPC crimes and 39% were SLL crimes.
  • Total crime incidences in India have risen by 120% between 2013 and 2022.

  • Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest incidences of cognizable crimes in 2022 with 7,53,675 total incidences. Of these, 53% were IPC crimes.
  • Maharashtra recorded the second-highest crime incidences in 2022 with 5,57,012 total incidences - a 3% increase over 2021. Of these, 67% were IPC crimes.
  • In 2022, 48% of all cognizable crime incidences were reported in the 5 states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
