  • A child born in India in 2022 is expected to live upto the age of 67.7 years (assuming that the prevailing patterns of age-specific mortality rates at the time of birth stay the same throughout its life).
  • India's life expectancy has decreased by 0.3 years between 2014 and 2022. This means that a child born in 2022 is expected to live shorter by 0.3 years over a child born in 2014.

  • The life expectancy of a female in India has remained higher than that of a male since atleast 2013. A girl child born in India in 2022 is expected to outlive a male by 3.1 years.
  • The life expectancy of a female born in 2022 is 69.4 years compared to 66.3 years of a male.
  • The gap between the life expectancy of a female and a male has increased from 2.9 years in 2014 to 3.1 years in 2022.

  • In comparison to its benchmarked G20 peers, India's life expectancy in 2022 was amongst the lowest, with only South Africa having a lower life expectancy than that of India.
  • India's life expectancy at birth has remained lower than the world average since 2000. The gap between the world average has increased from 3.5 years in 2014 to 4.3 years in 2022.
  • Though the government has accelerated progress through programmes such as Mission Indradhanush, Swachh Bharat Mission, National Rural Health Mission and Poshan Abhiyan, it will need to fasten the pace to provide equitable right to life to its newborns as that available in the developed countries.
