The Union government of India supports several developmental initiatives at the state level. These projects are aimed at supplementing the efforts made by state governments since the central government has more resources at its disposal. The entire cost of Central sector project is borne by the Central government.

Some examples of Central Sector Schemes include Bharatnet, Namami Gange-National Ganga Plan, LPG connection to poor households, Crop Insurance Scheme, recapitalisation of public sector banks, family welfare achemes, labour welfare schemes, National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme, National Scheme for Incentive to Girl Child for Secondary Education, interest subsidy for short term credit to farmers, MRTS and metro projects, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana and other credit guarantee funds, etc.

  • The total number of centrally-sponsored projects stood at 1,449 as of 31 Mar'23, 17.6% lower than a year ago and 104% more than as of Mar'14.
  • Of the total 1,449 projects as of Mar'23, 333 projects (23%) did not have a date of commissioning (D.O.C). Of the 1,116 projects commissioned, 726 projects (74%) were running behind schedule/delayed. Only 1.1% of the projects were running ahead of schedule and 25% were on schedule.

  • As of 31 Mar 23, 54% of projects in surface transport, 66% of projects in Railways, 63% of projects in Steel, and 62% of projects in Urban Development did not have a date of commissioning (D.O.C).
