Rural unemployment has shown the biggest drop at 5.84% compared to 8.16% in urban India

The unemployment rate in India fell sharply in January 2022 to a 12-month low of 6.57%, as per the latest data released by CMIE.

The level of 6.57% was last reached in Jan 2021 when the unemployment levels touched 6.52%. This fall in unemployment can be attributed to the easing of Covid restrictions in many sectors across states based on the falling Covid numbers.

Unemployment Rate (Rural & Urban India) - Jan 2022

Unemployment levels fell more sharply in rural India than in urban areas. The unemployment levels in rural India touched a 12-month low of 5.84% as against 7.28% in December 2021. In comparison, urban unemployment dropped marginally from 9.3% in December 2021 to 8.16% in January 2022.

Haryana recorded the highest level of unemployment at 23.4% across rural and urban India, followed by Rajasthan at 19% and Tripura at 17.1%. Telangana recorded the lowest level of unemployment across India in Jan'22 at 0.7%, followed by Gujarat at 1.2% and Odisha at 1.8%.

CMIE had also estimated the number of unemployed in India as of December 2021 at 47.5 million of which 14.5 million were women.
